Data Breakout: enabling future holographic communications

Optimising connectivity and reducing latency time is key to the development of new services and solutions such as holographic meetings.

Madrid, 22nd November 2022.- If there is one word we are going to hear non-stop in the coming years, it is undoubtedly latency. Latency basically measures the time that elapses between the client initiating the communication and the time it takes to receive the response. The order of magnitude in which we move is milliseconds or microseconds. Technology increasingly demands connectivity with the lowest possible latency. Whether in voice services, Augmented Reality (AI) or Virtual Reality (VR), the maximum viable RTD (Round Trip Delay) that is demanded is becoming lower and lower.

TGS’s Data Breakout solution helps its Customer meet this need, providing low latency and reducing international roaming costs. This solution is a kind of bridge between the user/device and the main server, wherever it may be, thus guaranteeing the quality of the transmission and the low response time. We are supporting our customers with their needs to provide high demand and low latency solutions whichever they are. From Washington to Hong Kong, the TGS footprint is global, helping to achieve customer proximity to their home network.

“Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality take video calling to the next level, allowing us to socialise, work, collaborate, interact and share in a way that traditional video does not. Thanks to the TGS Data Breakout solution we are able to reduce latency by up to 35%”.

HOLOVERSE, THE VIDEOCONFERENCE EVOLUTION

To further test our Data Breakout Solution, we have embarked in a Proof of Concept, within the Holoverse GSMAproject, with Deutsche Telekom and Telefónica GCTIO. This PoC aimed to compare latency reduction at an edge location

Video calling exploded during Covid-19 pandemic, allowing us all to work from home, train and keep in touch with friends & family. AR / VR takes it to the next level, to be “virtually there” in the same environment, to socialize, work, collaborate, interact, and share in a way that video does not allow. That is why the PoC consisted of a holographic communication application, where Deutsche Telekom subscribers needed to achieve “home-like” latency in a roaming location.

Several test scenarios were run to compare performance, i.e. Home Routed Roaming vs. Data Breakout, and after analysis, the result was that the TGS Data Breakout was best suited to meet the demanding latency requirements needed for holographic communications. Latency was reduced by an average of 35% when using TGS Data Breakout. . The goal is to improve the end-user experience in holographic communications by bringing the relevant application components closer to the end-user (by having better latency and jitter, saving transport bandwidth, and offloading graphic processing from the device to the network).

Optimising connectivity to Telco Edge and improving latency for roaming users is key to the development and growth of new types of services, such as holographic communications, Metaverse or C-V2X, and establish a way forward towards high-quality and low-latency roaming connectivity in 5G.
